Challenge:
Kansas City Public Television and the Mid America Regional Council needed a way to convey to residents the impact Light Rail would have in 20 years, if it were built today. They had already carried out a year long series of public meetings which culminated in the consensus that Kansas City residents want a future that is vibrant, green and connected, but what would that future look like? They needed a way to move beyond abstract concepts and visualize the future.
Our Solution
Our response was three minute animation that blended live action footage and computer generated imagery to show that Light Rail Transit is not just about moving people, but rather it is a catalyst for creating walkable neighborhoods that offer a high quality of life. We storyboarded a fast paced video that captured the activities and lifestyle improvements made possible by getting out of the car; including chance encounters (boy meets girl), walking your child to school, taking the train to the gym etc.
Results
The piece was received with applause at the town hall meeting and went on to be posted on over 60 blogs around the world as an example of how to use media to convey information in an emotionally compelling way.
